Cinemania started in 1987 as a World Film Panorama. From the very beginning, this film forum became a real vogue among Bulgarian spectators. Most attractive, significant films made worldwide, and not shown in Bulgarian cinema halls, were included in its program. In 1993, the panorama got a new name – Cinemania. This was caused by the democratic changes in Bulgaria. The distribution system was radically changed: private distributing companies and Bulgarian representatives of Hollywood major companies emerged, as well as independent film distributors. The regular film placard became more rich and varied.
Today, Cinemania presents remarkable and artistic cinema, that by some reason stays out of the Bulgarian film distributors’ interests. A part of the program includes most interesting events of the independent American cinema. Significant film titles predominate from national cinemas less popular in Bulgaria: some European and Asian productions, as well as film events from neighbor Balkan states: Serbia, Macedonia, Turkey, etc. Cinemania also presents retrospections (Yasudjiro Ozu, Milos Forman, Miroslav Ondricek, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Jacques Demy and others), artistic portraits of world famous names from present and past (Sven Nykvist, Robert Altman, Carlos Saura, Mormarev Bros). The forum’s program includes parallel events, such as premieres of books by world cinema names, round-table-talks and seminars.
The accent of Cinemania is on the selection and geography of films it offers. The idea is, in these two weeks to offer the Bulgarian spectators the most essential films made in the last 2-3 years that turned into real events during the European and world film festivals. Through the years Cinemania cultivated a special audience that eagerly waits for the event.
Purposes and Prospects:
In 2005 we initiated the Missed Films rubric, in which some of the best, though older, films of the last years are shown that did not get to Bulgaria. In 2006 we started with Classic Pleasures rubric with “Lust for Life”, “Summertime”, “2001: A Space Odyssey”. After the success of the Balkan folk legend Esma Redzepova, promoting the screening of When the Road Bends with her participation in 2007, we have opened the Music Films rubric.
