Organized under the aegis of the KaraFilm Society, a grouping of committed young filmmakers, the KaraFilm Festival is a celebration of the moving image and of storytelling. Our goal is to promote an appreciation of the art and craft of filmmaking among a wide population as well as to encourage creativity and high standards among filmmakers. We hope that this will have a salutary effect on the development of the motion picture industry in Pakistan and elsewhere.
Many years ago, international film festivals in Karachi attracted large audiences and some of the best filmmakers in the world. Satyajit Ray, for example, was one of a host of world renowned directors screening films in Karachi in the 1960s.
The KaraFilm Society deeply regrets announcing the deferment, for the time being, of the 8th KaraFilm Festival – the Karachi International Film Festival 2010. The Festival was originally scheduled to take place January 21 – 31, 2010 in Karachi.
The prevailing global economic recession and conditions within Pakistan have meant that we have been confronted with a severe cutback in financial support, which has made it impossible to organize the Festival in the manner worthy of an international film festival or to the standards expected by our loyal audiences. We fully realize that the decision to defer would be a disappointing one both for filmmakers and to thousands of people who were looking forward to the Festival in January but, despite our best efforts up until the last minute, the painful decision simply could not be avoided.
