"We believe only in what we like, hence we are ready to believe in falsehood if we like it better".
These are the words uttered by Tomas the illusionist, to disclose the secrets of his hypnotic trials to his wife.
Sometimes, not only magic but also human relations are based on the play of pretence and illusion. To prove that, Tomas tells his wife the strange love story of Emma and Sal.
Emma and Sal are a couple in their thirty-five who, after a long and apparently happy relationship, is going trough a serious crisis. They start seeing new friends who little by little involve them in affairs of betrayals, exchange of partners and loansharking.
In a state of growing emotional confusion, Emma and Sal try to save the remains of their relationship from definite crumbling. Hence, in a kind of suspense between reality and pretence, Emma and Sal go back over their love story through a "play of the parts".
In so doing, the two characters hope not only to revive their passion, but also to redraw the faded margins of their existences.
Within this "chimerical" play of the parts, all the characters interacting with Emma and Sal are just pawns driven by passionate and morbid instincts, gears of the same mechanism who fit perfectly, even though in an apparently contradictory and casual way, into a predetermined plan in which Tomas is more than a simple narrator.
