Founded in 1983 under the name "Anteprima per il cinema indipendente italiano," it takes place in the Romagna resort of Bellaria Igea Marina. The festival has played a leading role in the promotion of Italian independent cinema and, throughout its evolution, has always highlighted the need for mixing and crossing of genres, durations and formats of audiovisual products. The Bellaria Film Festival is the home of Italian independent cinema, a special home, by the sea: a point of reference for new and courageous experiments in film language.
Festival competitions

BFF New Wave
A space created within the Bellaria Film Festival that brings together the educational HUB, Doc Itinerances and (IN)EMERGENCY:
The BFF HUB is a section of the Bellaria Film Festival of training and workshops, a creative atelier for independent cinema. The four classes are dedicated to creative production, film criticism, working as a programmer in film festivals, and the Bellaria Film Festival Youth Jury that will decide the winner of the Red House competition.
(In)emergenza is a support program for Italian independent cinema in collaboration with Cinecittà: a professional development project for young authors, authors, and producers aimed at supporting them in the delicate post-production phase of a film project.
Itineranze Doc is an atelier for the development of first works of "Cinema of the Real," unique in Italy, which unites six festivals dedicated to independent cinema.
BFF Industry Days
A project dedicated to supporting the work of young authors, often funded by emerging production companies. These are often small projects, but crucial in defining the beginning of an artistic path in the world of cinema. Supporting these projects in the final stage of production can really make the difference resulting in an optimization of potential creative resources.
Archive
The archive of Italian independent cinema (Bellaria Film Festival archive) has unique characteristics in Italy: in addition to preserving all the films of Italian independent filmmakers, it preserves within it the Italian independent cinema of the 1980s and 1990s, the experimental and research cinema, that of the transition between film and digital.
BFF Off
A series of events that explore how cinema is an art that embraces different lines of expression. Book presentations, musical events and meetings with guests who do not all work directly in the world of cinema, but who know the deep sense of what it means to explore the image in the contemporary world.
