Laura is a forty-five years old married woman, with a teenage daughter.
Laura starts to express a feeling of discomfort both at home and work, due to a sexual abuse: the abuse is never shown, or mentioned, except for two quick flashbacks, where the raper approaches Laura, who sees him in a POV shot. This shocking event undermines Laura's serenity. Her quality of life starts to get worse: she has nightmares, physical disease and abnormal behaviour.
A new director, Stefania, comes to the company where Laura is working: at first Laura is unable to have a good relation with her. Afterwards, a connection between them arises, thanks to Stefania, and the two women become friends.
Laura will find the strenght to open herself up to Stefania: she will talk to her about the sexual abuse and agree to go to a Center for women against violence, following the advice of her new friend.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
"Laura's Hereafter" is about violence against women.
The film is included in the project “Firenze Crowd - FondiAmo Comunità” (2018) promoted by the Foundation CR Firenze and the Foundation Il Cuore si Scioglie Onlus.
The violence against women is one of the main emergencies of today's society, both for its impact and for the severe psychological, relational and social effects on victims. Women who have been sexually assaulted enact a strategy of avoidance, removal and dissociation. Cultural prejudice and victim self-blaming usually make the impact on victims life quality even worse.
The director's aim is to face this complex issue from an infrequent point of view: the film doesn't show the act of violence - except for two mentioned flashbacks - but focuses on the negative effects the victim experiences, to the point that she is not able to go on with her normal life.
It has been regarded as more important to describe the discomfort experienced after the sexual abuse, than the act of violence itself. In order to deal with this topic correctly, the director has drawn on the expertise of Associazione Artemisia Anti Violence Center of Florence.
