Romeo and Callisto are two homeless men living on the banks of the Tiber, in downtown Rome. Total opposites, physically and personality-wise, they have their daily ruses to get by, but their destructive attitude to the society “above the river” puts them into constant conflict. Their negativity is just about to spiral into madness when their relationship changes: Romeo falls fall ill and Callisto takes care of him, showing Romeo how much his friend really cares.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
The story told in Bassifondi is an unconventional love story, a fraternal bond of mutual emotional dependency that is unbreakable. The wise choice of the screenwriters, the brothers D’Innocenzo, was to focus obsessively on the two lead actors, without ever taking their eyes off them. The other characters in their orbit thus come off as objects, rather than people: objects with whom the duo collides and clashes and bounces off of as the two men retreat and turn back to their own tortuous path leading to death. In the background, Rome is a dark canvas of acid colors, mustard yellows verging on mossy green, in a kind of chromatic decomposition.
