"Uomini donne bambini (e cani)" is about a family made up of two young parents, Anna and Giovanni, and their five children, Vittorio, Nina, Veronica, Marco, Francesco, as well as a few dogs and cats, all set during the ‘60s. Also on the scene are four grandparents and an old great aunt. The events of the family and the lives of the parents are seen through the eyes of Nina, who’s naïve but attentive and sensitive. Anna, her foreign mother, a beautiful woman who has a spontaneous and original temperament, who’s suffocated by her daily chores, looking after too many children as well as managing the house, who’s always running late through the day, who suffers with her argumentative relationship with her husband. Giovanni, is an ambitious man, neurotic and macho, a rather over authoritarian father, distracted and absent. Anna’s unhappiness about her condition and the obvious lack of interest of her husband, starts to grow, but she tries to do everything she can in the name of a dream which has never been fulfilled: a really truly happy family. It’s true that when they’re all together they make up a small festive, colourful, chaotic tribe, but it’s just an image. Nina observes and comments, in relation to her inexperienced interior world, the flow of daily life, the subtle suffering of the mother, the polemics of the father, their harsh estrangement, and also the development of the marital crisis of her parents.
