The story, as the title states, is held in the year zero, the day before the birth of Christ, and is set in Judea. The story revolves around the figure of a village chief of baryons (Bèthaur) located a few miles from Bethlehem. The story is set at a time when Judea was oppressed by the Romans and plagued by constant demands for tributes.
