Tobruk, June 28th 1940. Italian anti-aircraft guns shot down the plane of Italo Balbo, Commander-in-Chief of Italian North Africa at the out-break of the 2nd World War. Few believed it was an accident. But if it was a conspiracy then who was behind it? Nearly 70 years have passed. The accident-incident has been written about and talked about in depth. Balbo the man, the military commander and politician, has been analysed in detail. But all research invariably focuses on two questions: who shot him down and why? It’s as though the blaze of that so-called “friendly fire” has blinded historians, writers and researchers to the point where they can’t see beyond the man who was killed and the man who killed him.
