Stunning silence is the first sensation one feels when entering the Certosa di
Firenze.
A balance between body and spirit through the testimonies of lives lived with
simplicity and peace, between art and divine.
Built almost 700 years ago, it was then enlarged, enriched and it has undergone
several modifications and restorations.
The monastery escaped the bombing during two wars.
The tuscan painters Pontormo and Bronzino lived at the Certosa during the
plague. Napoleon imprisoned two Popes there and during the centuries several
heads of state and intellectuals has hidden, found peace and inspiration inside the
walls.
Le Corbusier conceived the structure of the “Unitè d’habitation” by observing the
18 cells of the monks.
The Pinacoteca, the two Churchs, the Cemetery, the frescoes of Pontormo, the
Cloisters and the Well attributed to Michelangelo, give the Certosa an intriguing
decadency, which, however, does not spoil neither charm, nor that sense of peace
from one of the most symbolic places in Tuscany.
