Starting in 1965 a small group of people decided to move to a World War II dismantled army camp in the Californian desert and created what is known today as Slab City. They come from all backgrounds, ages, and ethnicities. Retirees, young hippies, outlaws, and squatters call Slab City their home. For different reasons they don't belong to “society” and so decided to create their own, with the only goal being not to give up their freedom. “A Slabber is not just who lives in Slab City, but to became a Slabber you need to spend at least two summers here; one summer you need to survive, the second one you need to be so crazy to stay here again” The daily life in Slab City is full of action and excitement, they are extreme in everything single thing they do and they are comfortable in this uninhabitable and dangerous place.
