Even though its title could suggest a simplification of the debate about the parity between animals and humans, the first feature by Alessandro Pugno is not necessarily an answer, but an empathy-infused confirmation. In a universe as complex as that of bullfighting, the filmmaker explores the growth of two characters that go from childhood to adulthood in front of the viewer’s eyes—Matteo, a young man who dreams of being a professional bullfighter, and Fandango, a bull calf born in a breeding center for bulls for competition. Despite spending their days in very different environments, the similarities between both lives, as well as their respective fates, are left clear from the very beginning. Both of them were separated from their families at an early age, and both of them suffered the physical consequences of an exhausting preparation. Matteo and Fandango will finally meet face to face at a bull ring.
