The documentary unfolds on three narrative levels. The backbone of the story consists of the story of the conquest of the Matterhorn in 1865 by the intrepid Englishman Edward Whymper and Jean Antoine Carrel, a fighter of the Italian Risorgimento. The second narrative level was created thanks to original contributions by narrators and essayists such as Hervè Barmasse and Enrico Camanni, assembled with materials from precious archival sources (such as the National Museum of the Duca degli Abruzzi mountain). Finally, there is the story of the ascent to the summit that the director, Nicolò Bongiorno, in search of a new inner freedom, performs together with the Matterhorn mountain guide Marco Barmasse. In this context, the father / son relationship is also explored: not only that between Marco Barmasse, Nicolò's guide, and Hervè Barmasse (in turn an alpine guide, very attached to the Matterhorn) but also that between Nicolò and Mike, to whom we wanted to pay homage within the documentary.
The film is as a wonderful journey through time, in direct contact with the wisdom of the wilderness, in search of a new inner "way".
