Cosa verrà is a feature-length documentary that blends an anthropological observation with a generational analysis. The film focuses on the students and teaching staff of the “Istituto comprensivo statale E. De Amicis” (state comprehensive school) in Floridia (southern Sicily), which combined in-person classes with distance learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic during the 2020-21 academic year. The film follows Eric and Alice, who – together with their classmates in the third year of middle school – are embarking on the important passage from childhood to adolescence in the midst of curbed freedoms and increasingly tough restrictions, with a burdensome past behind them and an uncertain future lying ahead. Their stories share a complex existential condition and take place against the backdrop of Italy and Europe’s deep south. Symbolically this is a border space whilst simultaneously being at the forefront of the effects of climate change.
