Late 1970s. They’re young and good-looking and are just twenty-five. They meet by chance and fall madly in love, until something unexpected happens to separate them. They will spend the next thirty years trying to meet again, because they still love each other.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
The point of departure was a true story that happened to me in the 1970s, which I’ve been thinking about turning into a film for a while. But I always put it off, maybe because I’ve never given pride of place to a real, proper love story. Too private for me? Probably, given that I’ve always been more interested in the effect that feelings have on a group of people instead of the simple pas-de-deux. Plus the fact that, however autobiographical any story you tell is bound to be, to some degree, I never wanted to be so direct. It also seemed a little reductive to confine a narrative to the “love story” genre. Once I got to work on it, though, this time I instantly realized that little by little, the story was growing bigger. It outgrew its original personal core and expanded in the direction of other dynamics and themes that did not directly concern me alone.
