On Mount Cervati, the highest mountain in Campania, Antonio grazes his animals and seems to speak their language. Winter brings with it bad news: due to new laws imposed by the village, the shepherd learns that he can no longer go to Cervati, the "sacred" mountain where religious processions and millennia-old transhumance take place. Conflicts with the community are increasingly escalating: Antonio manages to laboriously buy a piece of land, but finds that the municipality prevents him from even building there a shelter for animals. The villagers criticize him for his work and constantly remind him of the ban on walking around the village with dogs without a leash, even to the point of poisoning his favorite little dog. Antony through his relationship with animals he seems to find a place that among humans and their laws he does not he is able to have; his incommunicability with his fellow humans leads him to great loneliness. The rare moments of peace are those spent with his animals or with his fellow shepherds, with whom he confronts and shares the end of an ancient world. This is the story of a shepherd but it is first and foremost the story of a man and his lonely battle to find his place.
