Arianna is a squatter who has migrated to Hamburg from the Griko area of Calabria, a land where people still speak Homer's Greek. She often dreams of the Strait, and just as often a recurring nightmare haunts her: she cannot save a man who is shipwrecked between Scylla and Charybdis.
She must ruefully return to her native lands upon her grandmother's death, to recover-hopefully-her inheritance. She gains only a goat, Julia.
While - goat on a leash - she is sunbathing on the beach waiting for the train back to Hamburg, her sleep is interrupted by the screams of a drowning man: she wakes up and instinctively pulls him to safety. He introduces himself: it is Ulysses.
Arianna is thus convinced that she has rescued the village madman; as if that were not enough, while she was busy rescuing him, her backpack with her papers and little money was stolen.
But the more she travels around Calabria to lend a hand to the madman, the more she realizes that the man by her side is really Ulysses: a dreamlike short circuit is granting her a privileged journey with the myth, rediscovering her land.
Ulysses is seeking Homer's ghostwriter, Theagenes of Reggio, to try to change the ending of his story.
This journey will change both their lives.
