Maximilian, Max to his friends, freshly broken up moved to live in a basement apartment, the former concierge’s flat. He owns a bookstore and, to remain in a good residential area not far from the house where he had to leave almost everything, this is the only solution he could afford. He’s got a six year old child, and a wife who does everything she can to not let him see the child.
His friends assist him, helping him to set the new house: despite Ikea and the difficult assemblage of the “do-it-yourself” furniture, there’s still a friend who stay with him. Like everywhere in the Country, even his friends are separated... A problem shared is a problem halved? We can say, a problem shared is a problem for everyone. Paul, an actor (a very bad one), had to go back to live with his mother. He has no children and he’s recently engaged with an American girl. Nicholas, a psychoanalyst, but working for the public health system, therefore not a lot of money and not a lot of satisfactions as well, he’s separated too.
Roberto, two children, working as a cook in a school canteen, has an awful relationship with his wife... Therefore they console themselves, trying to get some serenity among friends in spite of the difficulties of surviving.
...but problems are around the corner: in the former wash-house lives a girl who is herself separated, beautiful, charming, but that is somehow the exact summary of all the things Max can’t bear, to start with her job: she’s an event planner... a widespread profession nowadays, in a society that Max despises...
She rings the door bell of the newly separated man to ask for some sugar... After a catastrophic beginning, they will start a love story scattered of ups and downs... “I love her”, “I’m going to marry her”, “She’s amazing”, “She’s a bitch”, “Let’s live together”, “This is the end”, “Let’s try again”...
...naturally, this was all being followed by the three friends...
The bitter ending will make us understand how much discomfort permeates couples’ relationships nowadays, beyond being males or females it will show us that difficulties exist on both sides: today, staying together, building something, being helpful towards each other, is more and more difficult...
...maybe we should reconsider the mutual stance and undoubtedly give up something in favor of a relationship... but are we really capable of this?
