Ukranian Whispers is the fruit of months spent in Ukraine, where the director Francesca Mannocchi, one of Europe’s top war correspondents, arrived before the beginning of the invasion. Mannocchi, with her peculiar ability to live among and gain the trust of the local population, wants to collect and narrate the small stories of who retains Memory: survivors. Among the freed streets of Bucha, Borodjanka, Irpin, she realized that to narrate a war means listening to its many survivors and their suffering. This is the starting point of Ukrainian Whisper’s reflection: for a long time we thought that if horror was closer, the spectators would understand the affront, the madness of war; that they would have reacted against these injustices. Today the situation is inverted, we live in a world saturated with images, we can be everywhere. What remains of the suffering a war produces? Looking seems like an involuntary action, on the contrary it is our first responsible act. Ukrainian Whispers wants to be a call to attention, to use a keener gaze on wars. A call to listen to the many voices that become one.
