In 2016 the National Research Council (CNR) and the University of Rome published a joint study on the discovery of a waste dump in the submarine canyons in the Strait of Messina. The discovery by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was not an isolated case but rather one of many underwater waste dumps around the world, from Gibraltar to Nice, Korea to Africa. With the aid of sophisticated last-generation equipment, the film documents underwater explorations carried out in late June 2023 by the film director and CNR marine geologists, marine biologists, and robotics engineers. The location was where the Mediterranean and the Ionian sea meet at a depth of 600 meters.
