Vincenzo Nibali decides to take a spring ride in his homeland, Sicily, which, this year, will not be the star of the Giro d'Italia. So begins the 'Giro Nibali' with friends and family; adults and children discovering the beauty of Sicily. Nibali retraces his life and his extraordinary victories, being one of seven cyclists to have won at least one edition of the three biggest European stage races: Giro d'Italia,Tour de France and Vuelta a España. The journey becomes a journey through the identity memory of a great cyclist, his childhood, his first rides, his move to Tuscany at only 16 years old to pursue his dream of becoming a great champion, his great victories, his retirement and his future.
Director's note
Vincenzo Nibali is a model: and this is not because he is ‘only’ a champion who has won so much, but because it is his mentality that has made him so: his family, his culture, his innate desire to win, his ability, as spontaneous as it is genuine, to be a strategist capable of combining sophisticated tactics with energy and power.
Our film, therefore, is an opportunity and perhaps even a small alibi to explore with him the world, the universe of family and friendships, that generated one of the greatest ever champions of European cycling.
In this sense, the trip around Messina, the small Sicilian tour that we recount, becomes an opportunity, only seemingly slight, to retrace an entire life dedicated to cycling, yes, but above all to his passion. Because this is above all our story. A child who is mysteriously ‘infected’ by the passion of his father, who educates him, follows him, encourages him, and helps him to turn the skinny kid who rides his bike over the hills of Messina with his friends into one of the greatest cyclists in Italian history: a model of style, of sporting elegance, but also a man who wins thanks to the values he brought with him and which - not only metaphorically - paved the way for him.
It is therefore the example of others, of a champion like Marco Pantani, that has generated in the South, in the South of Italy, beyond the straits, in Sicily what is known as ‘the Shark’. And indeed, the comparison of Spielbergian memory is not at all out of place if it were not for the fact that the idea of a shark on a bike makes one smile rather than arouse fear. Nibali, on the other hand, has the coolness and foresight of a great ‘predator of the road’, but - at the same time - an ancient sensitivity and integrity that make him as affable as he is ‘dangerous’ if one is his opponent on the road.
In this sense, our film is a unique and extraordinary opportunity to celebrate a great talent, but above all to communicate positive values to all the young people who will follow and - as is only right in sport - try to beat his exploits, his mentality, his being an example of a man from the South trained in the North, who has become the sporting emblem, but not only of the possibility of change. Because Vincenzo Nibali's is a story of change, not redemption. He is a man and a sportsman who has chosen another paradigm of challenge and mentality, thanks to his father, his family and the best that Sicily humanly and sportingly could offer. Winning, winning again and again. Because this is the story of Vincenzo Nibali: that of a champion still very young from whom everyone, even those who do not know how to pedal, can learn so much. Surrounded by the affection and esteem of family and friends, we tell the strange story of Vincenzo Nibali, who became the seventh champion in the history of world cycling also thanks to a slightly overweight father who - thanks to a gift from his wife - dedicated himself to cycling and became a super enthusiast... When you say destiny...
