The film focuses on the search for an imaginary Abel, the
shepherd, an archaic and emblematic figure in human history -
contemporary witness of almost invisible communities on the
fringes of borders, villages and territories.
Between Sardinia and Palestine, two geographically distant
but equally central places in the history of pastoralism from the
Middle East to the Mediterranean, the film encounters the lives
of shepherds surviving on the borders of a military polygon, in
a deconsecrated church and in the West Bank desert
controlled by the Israeli army. From the island-continent,
Sardinia, to the deserts of Jericho and Bethlehem, the shadow
of a permanent war appears.
At times, Abel emerges from a distant land, Palestine. There,
he expresses his struggle for survival in society. In the Judah
desert, the bedouin community lives in Area C, a part of the
West Bank under Israeli control since the Oslo Accords,
where Palestinian Bedouins have lived for hundreds of
years, now forced into constant displacement, demolition
and violence.
Abele's search subtends the archetype of the conflict, the
tale of a universal resistance of the shepherd men, in a
narrative spiral that does not find solutions but investigates
the signs of a peculiar human condition.
