Between faith and superstition, the vampire reveals the hidden soul of our culture. It is a collective journey through a lesser-known Italy, where scholars, historians, anthropologists, and communicators reconstruct the myth of the vampire as a cultural and anthropological phenomenon deeply rooted in our imagination. Far from conventional horror, the documentary explores the figure of the “returning one” through Balkan influences, apotropaic burials, and Christian beliefs that saw in the undecayed body both the mark of the demonic and the relic of the saint. Sampir is a visual and conceptual journey in which the vampire becomes a mirror of collective anxieties—eros and taboo, immortality and fear of death, otherness and desire— revealing how this creature, suspended between life and non-life, remains today a powerful key to understanding our collective Italian identity and imagination.
