The film is a black tale, like black is the colour of oil, which casts shadows over stories which are still without an end, seeking a future in a place where temporality is a cyclical repetition and progress is evanescent. The research of an Italian professor with a chair in the Netherlands, who has witnessed the social and environmental impacts of oil extraction for over 15 years, takes us to the Amazon, a region that is always perceived as central to our planet, yet so distant. Through travels and memories, those shadows, the dark side hidden in that marvel of biodiversity, become visible: the relentless exploitation that takes on ever-changing forms, the sacrifices and struggles of local communities fighting to preserve their identity and their land. Oil becomes the measure of distress, the metaphor of darkness and decay manifesting in countless forms. Following those shadows that stretch leaving their scars, we are taken to Italy. The perspective changes, however, the dynamics are recognisable. With a political and aesthetic vision that is unusual for present-day Italy, the narrative becomes a journey through eyes, hands, and voices that some would want to silence or erase, but which, instead, speak loudly in resistance against a distorted reality that few can perceive... Among them are those of a young woman from Basilicata, an artist who, after graduating in Bologna, decides to go back to her home region. Upon returning, she no longer finds what she left behind. All she encounters are walls and the difficulty in recognising herself. She then chooses civic engagement to create a new memory. Inspired by Ibsen, she transforms the voices and thoughts of her land into drawings. She draws the figures of all the ‘enemies of the people’ who oppose the oil giants and resist through music, art, activism, and academic work, each in their own way. In the growing intertwining and union of individual struggles, the dream that beauty can still prevail over cancer is stronger than any risk or abuse. And so it happens that, in this dark tale, a work of fiction reveals itself as reality and unveils the true identity of the enemies of the people.
