The film tells the story of the life of Italo Calvino, to celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of his birth, through the theme of cities: the “visible” ones, in which he lived, and the “invisible” ones, which he imagined for his famous book Invisible Cities (1972). The former are narrated using archival footage and interviews with Calvino, as well as reenactments by three actors who play him at different points of his life: Filippo Scotti, Alessio Vassallo and Valerio Mastandrea. Whereas Violante Placido is entrusted with the task of taking us inside his Invisible Cities, with a more cinematic language.
