Letizia Battaglia: photographer, environmentalist, politician, mother, a free-spirited and unconventional woman. Her skill in capturing the Sicilian reality and the mafia through her lens made her famous worldwide. To Italians, she is the most celebrated photojournalist; to the people of Palermo, she is simply "Letizia." A striking figure with piercing eyes, Leica around her neck, she stands out in the crowd, present in moments of joy as well as in times of despair. She began her career at the Sicilian newspaper “L’Ora", breaking the norms of a male-dominated journalistic world, launched “Mezzocielo" magazine, an expression of female social commitment, and then took a front-line stand against the mafia alongside Leoluca Orlando in Palermo’s municipal administration. Letizia is “Battaglia” (Battle) by name and in spirit. This film draws on unpublished photographs and testimonies to tell the story of an indomitable photography pioneer who, through her work, helped write one of the most significant chapters in Italian history.
