Today almost uninhabited, the island was a maximum security prison for over a century, therefore inaccessible. After the closure of the penitentiary in 1997, Enrico Mereu and his wife decided to stay on the island while all the other families of the prison staff left. From that moment on, Mereu dedicated himself to sculpture, an art that he discovered he had naturally as a child and decided to use no other material than the tree trunks stuck on the rocks and returned by the sea to the mainland. He has been sculpting these bones hardened by salt for over 25 years and his sculptures have traveled around Sardinia, Italy and even Europe.
