Prove per una tragedia siciliana is a declaration of love for Sicily. The island is seen through the lucid, affectionate eyes of an Italo-American who returns to the land of his ancestors’ (Turturro’s maternal grandparents came from Palermo and Aragona in the province of Agrigento), to rediscover his own roots and the island’s traditions and modernity. Turturro is in Sicily to carry out surveys for a film he has been thinking about for some time, one that will be made using the material in this diary of his research. Alongside John Turturro as director of the film is the New York theater director Roman Paska, whose work is inspired by traditional Chinese and Indonesian puppets and is based on the study and adaption of popular traditions.
