Paolo Rossi arrives in Pomigliano d’Arco with a small troupe to scout locations for a film about the liberation of the working class, which he intends to become the first film of a new genre, “civil surrealism.” The attention of the entire country is focused on the town because of the referendum on the contract Fiat signed with the unions. The protagonist meets three important representatives of the city – the mayor, the parish priest and the union leader – and participates at a dinner with the workers to understand what an assembly line is really like.
