163 minutes: three films, two short documentaries, and a few fragments are all that remain of Elvira Notari's work, Italy's first and most prolific female director. Her life remains in part an enigma—she left no letters or diaries, and only a handful of elusive photographs survive. And yet, recent encounters with this remarkable figure have given rise to a wave of new artistic explorations and research projects. Why does Elvira resonate so powerfully today? To explore that question, we return to the 1970s, when her long-neglected story began to reemerge in Naples in the context of feminist and avant-garde movements. The film brings together the pioneering researchers behind this rediscovery as they open the doors to some of the world's leading film archives. Within these treasure troves of photographs and rare documents, Elvira’s story comes into sharper focus.
