Johann Wilhelm Trollmann becomes middleweight champion in Nazi Germany. He is the first Roma boxer in the world to win the title. He is famous for his dancing fighting style. With the enactment of the racial laws, he is imprisoned in Wittenberge and Neuengamme concentration camps, where he dies at the age of 37. He decides to die as a champion and fights with a Nazi kapo who challenges him. Rukeli, which means tree, the Gipsy, knocks out the Nazi and the entire apparatus of power
DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
The choice to realise a short film was made by association Chi rom e… chi no, with a group of young Roma and Italian in the international project Tracer about Porrajmos Samudaripen, Holocaust of Roma and Sinti people. We decided to take an individual point of view: the story of the boxer Trollmann to focus on a narration through music and images that would have an emotional, poetic impact and reach the heart of the audience, to create empathetic connection and leverage memory to counter today’s discrimination, Nazi-fascism and anti- Gypsyism.
