On a small island in the heart of the Mediterranean, Ettore and Giovannino, two inseparable eleven and seven-year old friends, prepare to spend their last summer together. Ettore, forced to move onto the mainland to continue his studies, leaves a void on the island that Giovannino must fill. Through the archive and video camera of Pino, an elderly amateur video maker, time becomes shared memory, and the breath of the island – sciatu – becomes the breath of an entire community.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
Sciatunostro is the story of people who face life head-on and people who celebrate it and preserve its memory. The real star of the film is time. Time that changes, that regenerates and follows dynamics of its own. This film arises from a desire: to restore the voice of a collective memory that risks fading away, and to try and convey the feeling of separation. I have visited the island of Linosa for years and have long wanted to portray it in a story that evokes its essence. I feel that on the island time loses its coordinates, and for this reason I thought that the best way to talk about it would be to weave together two layers of time: the layer of the present, where Ettore and Giovannino live, and that of memory, preserved in Pino’s archival images.
