Metamorphosis sheds light on the voices of former dancers during this transition that permeates both mind and body.
Their personalities form the fabric of the film. The narrative follows a chronological structure—from the moment the former dancers accept the project to the final performance in Italy—thereby creating a certain dramatic arc.
All of them, former and current dancers of the Opera, come together for this ultimate performance: for the former dancers, a confrontation with who they once were; for the younger ones, a glimpse of what they might become.
The camera focuses on what remains of dance in the first chapter and moves closer to the bodies in the following two chapters to witness the physical reawakening of those who had left.
Dance, in the film, arrives late. Yet it is still present in the gestures of our characters in their new daily lives: a posture, a movement through space, an expression, an attitude shaped by their former profession.
Metamorphosis is shot in direct cinema style, without the filter of a voice-over narration. Any voice-over heard, comes from one of the characters themselves—excerpts from interviews conducted and recorded on location—as the director explores a style of narration that borders on fiction.
