Macchina Continua is a 20-minute documentary about the closure of Giano, part of the historic paper mill founded in the 1200s and producer of the famous F3 and F4 papers once found in every copy shop. Its protagonists are 195 workers, mostly young, forced to fight for their future and for the land where they built homes and families. The shutdown of a sector symbolic of local and national identity exposes the fragility of the industrial fabric against international investment funds, described by Alessandro Volpi as “the new masters of the world.” Through their stories we discover that Macchina Continua is not only the name of a paper used by Leonardo, Garibaldi, and Beethoven, but also an ancient village that has refined this craft for centuries. Losing paper at Macchina Continua means losing a piece of Italian culture.
