In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the 1955 Italy-Germany agreement that facilitated the travel of thousands of Italians to Germany. Many of these people went to work in the mines or in the fledgling German automotive industry. To commemorate this significant milestone in migration history, we will retrace some of the steps that characterised our arrival in Germany. This journey will remind us of our past as migrants, and of how far we had to go to be treated with respect and prove our worth, to the extent that we became the backbone of the local economy. For many who came from a still impoverished Italy in the post-war period, with an uncertain future, it was a moment of hope, offering more than just the chance to seek new opportunities and improve the lives of their loved ones. It was also a great battle to have their human dignity recognised as equal to that of everyone else. Initially, discrimination against Italians and other foreigners was evident. Often, there were signs at the entrance to establishments prohibiting Italians from entering. In Wolfsburg, the village of Berliner Brücke, which was built for Italian guest workers, was inhospitable. It was a kind of ghetto, built on the foundations of old Second World War camps. It had all the hallmarks of an area designed to prevent integration with the local population. Inside, freedoms were few and far between. The most difficult aspect for many was the impossibility of hosting wives and therefore families. This not only prevented Italian workers from spending time with their loved ones, but also caused suffering to those who remained at home and felt excluded. This was a major battle for women in particular, and it took more than 10 years to win it, finally allowing entire families to reunite and build a future together. This exciting documentary is reconstructed through exceptional old and new testimonies and original archive material. We will hear from many people who experienced those years first-hand and have since become iconic figures in the Italian-German community. However, it will not only be a story about the past. It will also reflect on the current situation regarding immigration. Like all migrations throughout history, the journey of Italians in Germany has been a difficult one. It has been a long journey, but ultimately it has contributed to the growth of the German nation. Today, Italians in Germany hold positions of power, participate in decision-making processes, and contribute to the development of cities. Prejudice against Italians in Germany has disappeared. Daniela Cavallo, the daughter of a Calabrian gastarbeiter, is now the chair of Volkswagen's Internal Commission. Immacolata Glosemeyer is a well-known and well-respected politician who is recognised for her proposals on youth policies. They both represent the pinnacle of Italian success in Germany. This success is also thanks to the many anonymous immigrants who have contributed with both their suffering and their dreams. The film documentary will be a recall of this long and epic journey told through the voices of who experienced these events and is still alive, evocative archive footage, music contributions and the testimony of personalities who have become icons of the German-Italian community. It will not only be a story about the past but also a reflection on the current challenges represented by immigration. The journey from discrimination to recognition mirrors the challenges faced by many migrant communities today, and highlights the ongoing dialogue between identity, inclusion and the founding values of our European Community. The documentary will not only reconstruct a fundamental chapter of German-Italian history, but also inspire a deeper reflection on the universal theme of migration that will continue to shape our future.
