The documentary follows the creative process behind the making of a unique photographic work: everyday objects, chosen for their symbolic value, are placed inside inhabited beehives and left for months to “converse” with the bees until they are transformed by their wax. Within this dialogue between nature and the modern world unfolds the story of the human protagonists and their landscapes: the large city contrasts with the small southern village where Massimiliano, a beekeeper and entrepreneur, welcomes us and shares his deep knowledge of rural life. Stefano, the artist and photographer who conceived the project, spends months in conversation with his idea of bees—an idea that turns out to be very different from the reality found in those almost deserted valleys. Massimiliano and Stefano weave their worlds together before the elusive, mysterious bees, as they attempt to carry out an aesthetic and conceptual experiment that questions our relationship with nature. The idea has its roots in a visionary experience from July 2020, created together with chef Tommaso Tonioni, a long-time collaborator of Stefano Delìa: a dish prepared by the chef was left inside a beehive for two weeks and then photographed, resulting in a powerful and evocative image that inspired the development of a broader project.
