Fernanda Wittgens was the Director of Milan’s Pinacoteca di Brera from 1937. During World War II she risked her life to save artworks and help persecuted people escape Fascist Italy, for which she was imprisoned. After the war, she led Brera’s reconstruction and fought for a museum open to everyone. Yet despite her groundbreaking work, her legacy slowly faded, and only fragments of her story remained. Would it have been the same if she had been a man?
