This is a film about reality today in Calabria, a region that is witness to violent struggles among the poor, as well as between locals and migrants, all of whom live in extreme poverty and compete with each other for the few remaining resources.
Calabria has the highest unemployment figures in Italy. It is also the poorest region in the country, and one of the poorest in the EU.
Every year, thousands of immigrants from Romania, Bulgaria, Africa and other countries arrive here hoping to build some kind of future. What they find is a region that has already seen mass emigration and few, if any, chances of regular work.
In order to survive, many of these people live in cardboard shacks. They collect metal, copper and whatever else they can find to sell on the black market. Some search for food in bins, others resort to petty thieving.
