Tracing the career of master Italian film editor Roberto Perpignani, the documentary explores his encounters with Orson Welles, Bernardo Bertolucci, the Taviani brothers and Massimo Troisi, culminating in his David di Donatello wins. Through anecdotes and personal memories, we discover the inner workings of a profession and the profound meaning of what it is to “shape through editing”: engaging with the footage, “questioning” it, listening to it, allowing it to speak. It is a poetic and philosophical reflection on aesthetics, vision and rhythm, as well as on the thread that connects the history of images to the history of ideas when crafting a film. In the course of the documentary, however, the perspective changes. Alongside the account of his career, Perpignani’s relationship with director Marco Chiarini also emerges, revealing a more personal reason behind the film: joyful and painful experiences that have marked Perpignani’s life are unexpectedly mirrored in the director’s own life. The trip to Paris, where the two visit an exhibition dedicated to Orson Welles – Perpignani’s first decisive professional encounter – becomes the moment when their experiences converge, transforming the film into a dialogue on filmmaking, the transmission of experience, and the profound meaning of this craft.
