Daughters is the story of a woman who lives far away from her own daughter and father in order to care for someone else’s mother. It is the story of Nata, who—twenty years after arriving in Puglia from Georgia—finds herself torn between staying and returning home. Nata and Teresa were brought together by necessity and chance. In the same space, they share two very different stages of life: for one, these are the opening years of a new beginning; for the other, they are the final chapter. As the sole witness to this period, Nata—who turns fifty-eight this year—serves as Teresa’s caregiver. It is the year her daughter, Teona, is set to marry a man Nata has never met. It is also the year Nata will return to Georgia for the first time in ages, where she hopes to embrace her father—a man who, like Teresa, is ninety-five years old. Because he lost his sight shortly after she left, Nata’s father remembers her only as she appeared the day she departed; he can never know what his daughter looks like now. Meanwhile, Teresa—who no longer speaks and suffers from senile dementia—seems to do nothing but gaze, though her eyes are fixed elsewhere, in another time. Daughtera chronicles a single year in the life of Nata and the community she has managed to build in Corato—a town of 48,000 inhabitants, more than 300 of whom are Georgian women. It is a story about memory, caregiving, and absence; it explores family bonds shaped by both geographical distance and the divide created by illness—as well as the unexpected connections that emerge, transcending the ties of blood.
