Figura is a Kafkaesque psychological drama that explores the generational dread of losing oneself in the transition to adulthood and yielding to societal compromises. Director Edoardo Summonti makes this identity crisis deeply visceral: the changing and alienating face of the protagonist, Riccardo, is not a simple fantasy device, but the painful, physical manifestation of an internal fracture caused by the oppressive rhythms and indifference of an anonymous metropolis.
To visually convey this psychological collapse, the direction relies on a powerful emotional claustrophobia, prioritizing tight shots and macro close-ups of the face, in stark contrast to a geometric, sharp cinematography that strips Rome of its classicism. The understated acting of Flavio D’Antoni and Francesco Patanè, combined with an aseptic sound design dominated by the mechanical noises of the city and muffled silences, converge to capture the exact moment of surrender, when the protagonist stops looking within himself only to become an anonymous figure in the crowd.
