Mandania is a sun-drenched, unchanging town in eastern Sicily, where the desire for change clashes with economic uncertainty and the routines of everyday life. Here lives Sara, an eighteen-year-old in her final year of high school, who divides her days between school, a job at a café to help support her family, political activism, and “La Macchina dei Sogni,” a performing arts course led by director Stefano. Her goal is to move to Bologna and study at DAMS, the university’s arts programme, seeking a future different from the one she sees around her.
What holds her back is her bond with Andrea, a cheerful, charming, and elusive young man who shares neither her cultural interests nor her desire for change. Their relationship is marked by both attraction and conflict: Sara wants to leave, while Andrea seems content to live in the present without questioning what lies ahead. When she persuades him to join the theatre course, something fractures in the relationship between the boy and his father Antonio, a widowed lawyer haunted by wounds he has never truly confronted.
The theatre becomes a meeting point for aspirations, family tensions, and long-buried secrets. Under Stefano’s guidance, what unfolds on stage begins to intertwine with the protagonists’ lives, blurring the boundary between what they choose and what seems to have already been decided for them. For Sara, claiming her freedom means questioning not only the place where she grew up, but also the expectations of those she loves.
La Macchina dei Sogni is a coming-of-age story woven with social commentary, bringing together love, identity, and artistic creation. Through the dilemma of a generation torn between leaving and staying, the film explores the power of stories and the courage it takes to free one’s life from the roles imposed by others.
