The exceptional story of a woman pioneer, a visionary scientist and one of the first Italian environmentalists. In the early decades of the twentieth century, Eva Mameli Calvino built an exceptional career, driven by a profound passion for nature and botanical research, which from Sardinia took her to Pavia, Cuba and Sanremo. The first woman in Italy to be certified to teach Botany, in 1926 she also became the first woman to direct a botanical garden, in Cagliari. At a time when women had to choose between family and career, Eva rejected this alternative, establishing her reputation as a scientist and raising her children, including the future author Italo Calvino. It was due in part to her scientific contribution that Sanremo became the ‘city of flowers’. Through her own words, archival materials, interviews, reconstructions and original animations, the film rediscovers a woman who turned her love for nature and knowledge into a mission in service of society.
