A choral tale that involves a group of mothers and children from Nigeria, Ethiopia, Senegal, Morocco, Eritrea and Tunisia, who are all squatting in the “Spin Time” and “4Stelle” buildings in Rome. The story follows a day at the beach: from the time they wake up in the morning to their train ride out, from the encounter with the sea to the disappearance of little Adonai, which activates and brings back out the shared trauma of their journey across the Mediterranean. A trauma that resonates in all of them, in the children, who absorb it like a legacy, in the mothers who made that journey personally and are solicited by relatives still remaining in Tunisia or who continue their journey northwards. Immersing one’s self in the sea means facing the memory of their traveling companions who lost their lives, the presence of spirits, mermaids, mamiwata who drag people into the abyss, as well as the opening toward a mysterious and spiritual dimension that reconnects to unity.
Director's Statement
In a space in-between reality and fiction, in a women’s community of migrant mothers and children born in Italy, various narrative threads intertwine, all tied to the relationship with the sea. Migration as separation from the motherland and the many manifestations of spirituality.
