Summer 1943. Penny and Baby are sisters and are now orphans. They move to their auntie's house, a beautiful villa in Tuscany's countryside.
Their aunt is their mother's sister, married to a charming intellectual German man a music and art lover. The whole film is narrated by Penny, the oldest sister: through her eyes we wiII see the extraordinary world that surrounds the happy villa and its eccentric inhabitants.
We will see Penny and Baby's friendship with the farmers' children. the events at the local school; the awareness of a cruel and unbelievable reality; the discovery of the flrst feellngs of love; the friendship with a kind German officer; fascinating Uncle Wllhelm, an idealist and intellectual Jew who longs for justice.
We will see all the events, until the tragic end of the war during which the whole Elnstein family will be sacrificed: the auntie and the two little cousins will be killed by the escaping Germans, and consequently the uncle will commit suicide out of desperation.
