Paolo, once an expert regatta skipper, is stagnating in a tourist village as an entertainment counsellor and sailing instructor. Then one day he is offered the command of a yacht, on the condition that he takes seven troubled young people out to sea. The Professor, a rich businessman, is organising the trip as therapy for his grandson Andrea, a semi-autistic boy. With no experience as a therapist, and a bitter cynicism rooted in his own past, Paolo tries to ditch the problem kids and keep the boat but the Professor sends Francesca, an ambitious female lawyer to keep an eye on him throughout the journey. Both the behaviour of the troubled crew and the uncooperative weather make the trip a trying one, but by the time it is over, Paolo and Francesca are in love, and the young people are doing so much better that they decide to head right back out to sea with the couple.
