May 7, 1948, a week before the creation of the state of Israel. The British empire will end their mandate and leave Palestine. violence has already raged for six months between the Jewish communities...The cargo freighter Kedma ("Toward the Orient") sails toward Palestine. Hundreds of concentration camp survivors from all corners of Europe are crammed on board. The Palmach, the underground Jewish defense forces, are preparing for the arrival of the Kedma. The British soldiers are positioned to stop the boat's unauthorized landing. After total confusion on the beach, dispersed groups of immigrants manage to escape into the nearby hills...
