The problem of Palestine has been an issue for many, many years. The complexity of the issue and everything which surrounds it is part of the recent history of humanity. Directly and indirectly.
And so it was natural for us, from the “cinema of the present” to think about a new collective film which documents the atrocious conditions in which that population lives.
But it would be better to say “recounts” rather than documents. In fact, for the first time we find ourselves in front of a particular reality, with a creative soul which is specific to our profession.
It’s shown in a film which is made up of fragments, inspirations, faces, houses: basically history. Above all it’s to show one thing: the extraordinary cultural and intellectual vitality – as well as physical - of this oppressed people.
Mario Monicelli suggested to us that we call the film “Letters from Palestine” and we couldn’ think of a better title. We wholeheartedly agreed.
