Marcoing, near Cambrai, France 28 September 1918. An English assault platoon makes an attack to some German positions. The artillery hits all the ground. One of the soldiers, Henry Tandey, finds shelter in a hole. Instinctinvely he tries to cover himself, but a sound makes him turn to a German soldier pointing a rifle at him. The German shoots, but the gun misfires. The English pulls out his knife and hits him; to make him stop crying, he fills his mouth with mud, but, with a sudden weakness penetrating him, he can’t kill the man. Instead, Henry unwinds his personal bendage pocket and dresses his victim’s wounds. Before leaving, after the German has asked for his name, he, too, questions: «And your name, camerade?», «Caporal Adolf Hitler».
