On the threshold of the 16th century, per an edict of Queen Isabel of Castile, Jews and Muslims are expelled from Spain, in the name of a State religion that for the first time in history separates the believers from the non-believers. The Jews of Spain await a new exodus and perhaps, after Moses, a new Messiah to lead them across another desert and beyond another sea. Yet for Giosué, this apparently unavoidable destiny crosses that of another Jew, Jesus of Nazareth. La Passione di Giosuè l’Ebreo constitutes both an outcry against intolerance and a sign of hope for those who believe in the love of human being.
